Primary ICT / Computing – UK National Curriculum Overview
The UK National Curriculum for Primary ICT / Computing is designed to give young learners the essential digital skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. At the primary level, pupils are introduced to the foundations of computing in a fun, engaging, and age-appropriate way. The curriculum focuses on helping children understand how technology works, how to use it safely, and how to create simple digital content with confidence.
What Do Primary Students Learn in Computing?
The Primary Computing curriculum is divided into three main strands:
Computer Science (Early Coding & Problem-Solving)
Information Technology (Using Digital Tools)
Digital Literacy (Online Safety & Responsible Use)
These core areas build a strong digital foundation for pupils from Year 1 to Year 6.
1. Computer Science – Early Coding & Logical Thinking
In primary school, children begin to explore the basics of how computers work. Lessons include:
Understanding simple algorithms
Creating and debugging basic programs
Learning coding skills through block-based platforms (e.g., Scratch)
Using logical reasoning to solve problems
These activities help develop critical thinking and prepare pupils for more advanced computing in secondary school.
2. Information Technology – Using Digital Tools Creatively
Primary pupils learn how to use technology to create and present information. This includes:
Typing and word processing
Creating presentations and simple digital projects
Using tablets and computers to organise, store, and retrieve information
Creating images, videos, and simple animations
Learning basic data handling and graph creation
These skills help children use technology productively and creatively across different subjects.
3. Digital Literacy – Online Safety & Responsible Use
Online safety is a core part of the Primary Computing curriculum. Children learn how to:
Use the internet safely and responsibly
Protect personal information
Understand what to do if they encounter something unsafe online
Communicate respectfully in digital spaces
Recognise trusted websites and reliable information
This prepares young learners for safe and positive online experiences.
Why Primary Computing Matters A strong start in Computing helps children:
Build confidence using everyday technology
Develop problem-solving and logical thinking
Use creativity through digital projects
Build safe online habits from an early age
Prepare for future learning in coding, STEM, and digital literacy
These skills support learning across all subjects and are essential in today’s digital world.
